Ahhh! The heady days of high school… homecoming, proms, and the days when dad lets you drive the car to school!
At Hillcrest Christian School add weekly chapel services which feature the Student Worship Band as well as outstanding speakers, a high school retreat held every fall, Spiritual Emphasis Week, an annual European Study Tour and Senior trip. Don’t forget the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and Associated Student Body for experience in student government.
Our High School, under the direction of Principal, Kathy Horan, is dedicated to offering the highest level of academic curriculum in order to prepare each student for the challenges of college, and ultimately to fulfill God’s plan for his or her life. Hillcrest has courses at the College Preparatory and Honors/Advanced Placement levels. In addition, we offer an Independent Study Extension Program that gives home-school students an opportunity to participate in higher-level academic classes. Our CP program meets minimum entrance requirements at most colleges and universities; the Honors and Advanced classes offer an additional challenge to students who have demonstrated exceptional academic promise. Our course offerings include the complete range of major academic subjects, plus four years of Bible, and electives such as Art & Music Appreciation, Speech, Newspaper, Film & Literature, and Yearbook. Our average Student:Teacher ratio in the high school classes is 14:1.
For the student to be eligible for admission, at least one parent or guardian must be a Christian who desires a Christ-centered education and who agrees with and actively supports our statement of faith, guiding principles, and policies.
Christian students, who desire a Christian education but whose parents are not believers, will also be considered for admission.
All families seeking admission to HCS will fill out a pre-interview questionnaire. Families must present a pastor's reference from a Bible based evangelical church, report cards, SATs, and any special education assessments as part of their pre-interview documentation.
Students will be tested and interviewed by a faculty member, and a separate parent interview will be conducted by an administrator, usually the vice-principal. During the interview, HCS will try to make certain that parents understand and are supportive of the school’s mission and policies, and answer any questions that parents may have.

Hillcrest Christian School admits students of any race, color, nationality, or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Hillcrest Christian School does not discriminate on the basis of race in administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school-administered programs.
The high school curriculum prepares students for admission to the UC system. Although students must earn 240 credits to receive a Hillcrest diploma, most seniors graduate with 260 credits. Courses include Bible, English, Spanish, social science, lab science, mathematics, fine arts, and physical education. Students may take honors level courses in American history, American government, and Spanish language. Advanced courses include physics, pre calculus, calculus, anatomy and physiology, marine biology, and AP Spanish.
Typically ninth grade students who are preparing to matriculate to a four year university take Bible, English, which includes vocabulary and systematic grammar instructions but focuses on literature and literary analysis and composition skills, physical science, Spanish I or II, Algebra I or geometry, physical education and an elective.
Sophomores take Bible, world literature, which includes vocabulary, literary analysis, and composition, biology, geometry or Algebra II, Spanish II or Spanish III, AP/honors European history or world history, and physical education.
Junior course include Bible, American literature, Algebra II or pre calculus, Spanish II or IV, AP/honors or CP American history, chemistry, and an elective.
Seniors at Hillcrest are required to take five classes rather than seven. Students who are four year college bound usually take Bible, British literature, AP/honors or CP American government and Economics, physics, pre calculus or calculus. Some may take Spanish IV.

The high school retreat is held every fall, setting the foundation for the year. This retreat is generally held during the first week of October. Students and teachers have the opportunity to spend two nights and three days at a beautiful conference center in Lake Hughes. The staff and student leadership seek to establish the spiritual tone and focus for the year and hope that each individual seeks to also do the same for himself or herself.
Chapel, featuring praise and worship, as well as guest speakers from the Christian community is held every other week. On the alternate weeks, students choose to be a part of the different small groups that are led by the faculty. Some choose to focus on a study of God's word; others focus on prayer or the application of Biblical principles to their daily lives. In addition
Spiritual Emphasis Week occurs in March of each year. During this week, extended chapels feature praise and worship and insightful teaching by a conference speaker. It provides both staff and students with an opportunity to refocus on the spiritual goals established during the fall retreat.
European Study Tour: Each spring, high school students have the opportunity to spend 9-11 days in a foreign country. Hillcrest students have traveled to Italy, England, Ireland, France, and Spain. They have had the opportunity to visit Normandy where they have experienced in a small way the enormous significance of the D-Day invasion. Literature and history have come alive for many of these students; they have seen some of the great art treasures of the world up close and personal. Many of our alumni continue to travel with us each year. The 2007-2008 trip will depart May 21, 2007 and return on June 1, 2007. This year the students and their chaperones will travel to China and Hong Kong. Look for photos from last year's trip on the news section of this web site.
Associated Student Body (ASB) is made up of 9th-12th grade students who are elected by the high school student body. Members must be in good academic standing and must be willing to sacrifice time and effort in order to lead the school in a positive direction.
Each spring a convention is held where the student body votes on a unified platform that the following year’s ASB will attempt to implement. Also taking place at this convention, candidates for president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary give campaign speeches and are chosen to positions for the following year.
In October, ASB members have the opportunity to attend a leadership conference sponsored by the ASCI. This has been a great teambuilding and leadership experience for all those involved in the past. ASB members coordinate service projects, campus cleanup programs, class competitions, and a variety of other events.
The National Honor Society is one of the most prestigious and high-ranking scholastic and service based organizations amongst the nation's high schools, colleges and universities. Membership in the NHS is reflected on student transcripts and weighs heavily in the college admission process. Acceptance is based on four ideals: scholarship (min 3.5 GPA), leadership, service, and character. As members, students (10th-12th grade) are encouraged to demonstrate ideals through individual and group service projects in the community throughout the school year. This is truly an awesome opportunity to serve as an example and to share God's love and message with others
Hillcrest has a chapter of the California Scholarship Federation. This organization founded in 1921 emphasizes the importance of scholarship and service. Students qualify for membership on the basis of their semester grades in academic subjects, their reputation for good citizenship, and their community service activities.
Each year, the homecoming festivities begin with a weeklong demonstration of Hillcrest pride! Students show their school spirit by dressing in school colors, participating in pep rallies, and class competitions. The highlight of the week is of course the football game and the homecoming dance and the crowning of the court.
It's fun to be a senior at Hillcrest! Our small size makes it easy to foster a sense of family, and the senior retreat is designed to accomplish that purpose. Senior retreat has in recent years been scheduled in the early spring. The seniors have just finished sending off their applications to college, and some may have already received their acceptance notices if they have chosen to apply for early action or early decision. Almost all are beginning to realize that their time in high school is rapidly coming to an end. The senior retreat, which can be a camping trip at the beach, a weekend at the lake, or in the mountains, is a time to solidify old friendships and perhaps take the opportunity to get to know someone outside one's circle of friends. The senior trip, held in April during the Stanford Achievement Test week, is another opportunity for students to enjoy each other's company. It is a time of fun, fellowship, and affirmation as seniors look toward graduation and life as college students.
As a member of the CIF-Southern Section and the Omega League, high school athletes participate in football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's volleyball, soccer, golf, women's softball, and cheerleading.
During the 2004-2005 school year, Hillcrest's athletes were awarded Westside League sportsmanship awards in the following sports: girl's volleyball, boy's and girl's basketball, and boy's volleyball.
