Hillcrest Christian Announces Academic Contest
Learn about our first president and win scholarship money.

Stephen Allen, the Head of School for Hillcrest Christian School announced the introduction of a new academic contest for the students of HCS. In conjunction with President’s Day, Allen informed the students of an academic contest conducted on the "Life and Times of George Washington". On a voluntary basis, students in grades four through twelve will compete first in a written quiz on the topic. Top quiz scorers for each grade will receive a prize of a U.S. Savings Bond. The students with the top three scores in the entire competition will compete in a game show-type competition to determine the student with the most demonstrated knowledge on George Washington’s life and times. The written quiz will take place on April 6. The students with the top three scores will compete in a game show setting in a school assembly on April 28. The top prize will include a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond for use toward the winner’s college education. A private donor and the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village branch of Wells Fargo contributed prizes.

This contest will accomplish several things for HCS students.

1. Since the contest is voluntary, students who enjoy studying history and our country’s heritage can choose to learn on this topic.

2. Funds are available for college tuition. That should excite a number of our students to compete.

3. The contest allows for the development of self-directed learning, if students decide to compete in the contest. [HCS ESLR: Self-Directed Learning]

3. The contest builds in a possibility for team building. [HCS ELSR: Team building] Students are able to form study teams with anyone to try to learn about the life and times of our first president.

The bottom line is that, for those who opt to participate, students can have fun learning and competing with one another. If students and parents keep the attitude that learning can be fun, then this will become an exciting even
