Whether you’re a frequent visitor to Hawaii or you’ve never stepped foot off the mainland, most people know to expect an “Aloha” when they’re coming or going from the Islands. For months, we anticipated this trip with such excitement, and now that we’ve returned, I must say that it was one of the best experiences, coming and going, that I’ve ever had. From the moment we touched down in Oahu, a sequence of unforgettable memories began.
Though our wallets were opened in greater measure as we strolled through the miles of the Ala Moana shopping mall, our eyes and hearts were also opened as we walked over the solemn seas of Pearl Harbor over the deck of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. The beach bums among us were in heaven as we enjoyed the sun-drenched sands of Waikiki, and even Mr. Gutierrez tested his surfing skills out on the waves. We also had the opportunity for a thrilling catamaran ride from Waikiki beach, and let me tell you, not one of us came back to shore with dry clothes! One memorable evening, we stuffed ourselves in typical senior fashion with multiple servings at a tropical buffet, and saw an impressive display of Polynesian dancing as well. And none of us will ever forget the saga of the “rare, golden macaw!” As a perfect end to our amazing trip, we spent our final evening loving and encouraging one another, setting an “Affirmations” time record of 4 hours! There, the depth of many friendships was truly revealed in the tears, laughter, and heartfelt acknowledgements of strong relationships.
As a class, I know we cherished the week to get away and be together. Though some skeptics suspected that division might arise along the way, we went there as one, and we returned as one, and that is something I will always remember.
