Hillcrest Christian School Board of Directors

The Board of Directors primarily sets the governing policies for Hillcrest Christian School. The Board of Directors supervises and evaluates the school’s chief executive officer, the Head of School. Other duties include defining and periodically reevaluating the school’s mission and major goals, strategic plan, and the budget and policy statements. In addition, the Board of Directors ensures that the organization obtains the resources necessary to meet the strategic plan.

School Board Members

Mark Wiemann has been a board member since September 2005. He serves as the president. After attending Azusa Pacific University, he has been a wholesale produce broker since 1980 and started his own brokerage company in 1994. Mark is married to D’Vonne and has two children, Jennifer and Hunter. Mark and his family attend Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village. Mark is an avid golfer and also enjoys bowling, softball, and spending time with his family.

Doug Hume joined our Board of Directors in April 2007.  Doug is married with three children and attends Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village with his family.  Doug is an attorney with the law firm of Catanese & Wells located in Westlake Village.  He has practiced law for ten years focusing his practice on business matters with an emphasis on capital raising, business formation, and civil and estate litigation.  Doug received his B.A. in Political Science and Business Administration from Azusa Pacific University in 1993, and earned his Juris Doctor in 1997, from Pepperdine University.  He also serves as an Adjunct Professor of History and Political Science at Azusa Pacific teaching courses in Constitutional Law and Legal Studies.  Doug enjoys spending time with family as well as triathlons and golf.

Tony Hershman joined the board in May of 2013. Tony is married to Linda and has two sons, Chase and Josh .  The boys have attended Hillcrest since Josh was in pre-school and Chase was in 2nd grade. Tony and his family attend Calvary Chapel Godspeak in Newbury Park. At their prior church Tony served in Men’s Leadership and on church counsel, as well as the on the board of the Simi Crisis Pregnancy Center  for several years. Tony  works as Vice President of Strategic Acquisitions Inc, one of Southern California’s largest distressed asset management companies.  In his free time, Tony enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and traveling.

Rich Person grew up in Washington state and graduated from George Fox University.  From there he went on to earn his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from University of Nevada and a law degree from Southern Methodist University.  Rich and his wife Kelly and their three daughters (Aliyah, Anjoli and Avonli) have lived in Thousand Oaks for fourteen years and attend Skyline Church, where he is a member of the worship team.  Rich currently works as a patent attorney for Amgen.

Tom Rettinger joined our Board of Directors in September 2010. Tom and his wife Wendy have three children who all attend HCS. He attends Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village with his family. Tom is a Managing Director with PennyMac in the firm’s Calabasas office. Tom has been managing investment portfolios and risk for large lending institutions over the past 18 years. He received his B.A. in Mathematics from Rutgers College in 1989, and earned Master’s in 1994 from Rutgers Graduate School. Tom and Wendy are very involved in the sports program at Hillcrest. He enjoys spending time with family and coaching and tries to get outside to golf as much as he can.

Bret Shellabarger is currently the Executive Pastor of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Newbury Park CA. and oversees the church operations, ministries and community outreach. Pastor Shellabarger has been serving in the Church since 1997 in the Santa Barbara, Malibu & Thousand Oaks regions. Prior to his pastoral calling, for over 17 years, Mr. Shellabarger has held several sales & management positions with Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in the Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills area. In 2004 he and his wife Susie and three children (Zak, Sam & Malia) moved back to their hometown of Santa Barbara to fulfill God’s call to full time ministry and was ordained at Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara.

Rick Stabile is married with two children and is the senior pastor of The Rock Community Church in Thousand Oaks.  Rick experienced a profitable management career in the information systems field for twenty years before being called into full time vocational ministry in 2002. He also began serving as a chaplain for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department in 2006. Rick enjoys spending time with his family, studying the Bible, tinkering with new technologies, motorcycle riding, and playing guitar. Rick joined our Board of Directors in March 2007.

Hillcrest Christian School Administrative Staff

Principal – Kathy Horan:

The Principal is responsible for overseeing the academics, discipline, extra and co-curricular activities, and programs involving the students in grades kindergarten through twelve. The principal is a member of the administrative team and reports to the Head of School.

Kathy Horan is the School Principal. She has been a teacher at Hillcrest Christian School for fifteen years, and has served in various administrative positions including curriculum coordination, lead teacher and assistant principal for the past seven years. Mrs. Horan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Santa Clara.

Kathy is married to Tom who also graduated from the University of Santa Clara. They have three children – Tommy, who graduated from the University of Southern California, and Patrick (HCS class of 2002) a graduate of University of Notre Dame, and Kaitlin (HCS class of 2004) who is a freshman at Texas Christian University.

Preschool Director – Trish Berg:

The Preschool Director provides leadership and oversight to the five Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten classes and the Preschool/Pre-K/Kindergarten morning and after-school childcare programs. Kindergarten in included in the elementary school. The Preschool Director is a member of the administrative team and reports to the Head of School.

Secondary Dean of Students – Penny Hawkins:

The Dean of Students is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with all students and overseeing any necessary student disciplinary action. The Dean also works with parents and teachers to make sure accommodations are implemented in the classroom for students who have current recommendations. This position reports directly to the Principal.

Mrs. Hawkins has been a fourth grade teacher for the past ten years at Hillcrest Christian School, as well as a member of the elementary chapel staff. Penny has a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the University of North Texas . Mrs. Hawkins has been married for twenty six years to Jeff. They have two children, BrieAnna and Zachry. Brie is a HCS graduate and a senior at Abilene Christian University in Texas. Zac has attended HCS since second grade and is currently a senior.

Athletic Director, Brady Day:

Brady Day is a graduate of California Lutheran University class of ’94 with a BA in marketing and advertising and a minor in coaching. He was a four-year member of the track & field team while at CLU.

He served as the CLU assistant track and field coach from 1994-2000 and the head cross country coach from 1996-1998. He began teaching at Canoga Park Lutheran School in 1996, where he served as Athletic Director, middle school teacher, and coach. In 2009 he began teaching at West Valley Christian School where he taught in the middle school and took over the varsity boys’ basketball team. During the 2009-2010 season, he led the West Valley Christian boys’ basketball team to its first CIF championship. Brady was named the Omega League coach of the year and the CIF division 6A coach of the year.

Brady is married to his wife Christy, who works part-time at their church, Simi Covenant. They have two boys, Nikolas, 9 who is in the 4th grade and Zackery, 7 who is in the 2nd grade.

Welcome to the Registrar’s Office.

Our office is responsible for registering new students, student records, report cards, and transcripts.

NEW STUDENTS: Once you have been accepted to Hillcrest, we will need all of your paperwork and fees as soon as possible. Use this CHECKLIST to be certain that you have completed and returned all required documents. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

CURRENT FAMILIES: Contact our office if you need copies of report cards or transcripts.

GRADUATES and TRANSFER: Download the TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM and mail it to us. Please provide all requested information so that your transcript can be sent on time and to the right place.

Employment Overview

HCS is a non-profit, private co-educational, college preparatory school that spans services from two-year olds through high school. HCS is accredited by both the Association of Christian Schools International and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In operation since 1977, there are approximately 300 students making our student-to-teacher ratio one that is able to offer more focused attention for students as well as many opportunities for students to experience success, spiritual growth, and a caring environment. HCS intentionally strives to serve Christian families who are committed to a church body. Thousand Oaks is a suburb approximately 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California.

The Administration/Teacher Application is for administration and faculty positions only. Please use the Classified Application for all other positions, including substitute teaching, coaching, support staff, maintenance, etc.

HCS Cafe

The Hillcrest Cafe offers a variety of lunch and snack items providing a convenient and affordable alternative to bringing lunch from home. The café is open for morning snacks at 8:00 AM through lunch and until 3:45 for after-school snacks.

Snacks and lunch items may be purchased during morning breaks and lunch times. Hot lunches, including drinks, may be ordered during homeroom each day.

A menu is sent home at the beginning of the year showing the specific hot lunch items offered each day, along with the a-la-carte selections such as sandwiches, chips, snacks, and drinks. We also offer selections from Subway and Dominos daily.

Accounts for Café purchases for each student may be established directly with the Café for $60. Parents will be notified in writing when the balance is low to arrange replenishment. There will be no purchases without cash or a current account.

Before/After School Childcare

Hillcrest provides childcare before and after school from 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM for preschool and from 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. To meet the varied needs of our families, there are two program options explained below.

Discounted Extended Childcare Fee Options

If a family requires extended childcare on a regular basis, the monthly fee is the best value. One can sign up for mornings, evenings, or both for the amount of days needed each week. In order to receive the discounted rate, families commit to a 10-month plan. All monthly childcare fees are due on the first of the month and paid directly to HCS. The enrollment forms list the various pricing options.




Drop-In students are welcome. Please fill out a Day Care Enrollment Form if you anticipate ever needing drop-in daycare. The hourly rate is $6.75 per student. Please notify staff ahead of time, so your child and staff will know where they need to be at school. All drop in day care fees are billed at the end of each month and paid directly to HCS

There is NO DAY CARE available when there is NO SCHOOL
