Hello, my name is Olivia Serrano!

This is my first year at Hillcrest Christian and I am excited to teach to second! I graduated from California Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Education Studies and received my preliminary credential in Multiple Subjects from there as well.

In second grade, learning becomes more rigorous; students begin to transition from dependent to independent learners. We focus on solidifying foundational skills and deepening understanding. I look forward to guiding students in hands-on, collaborative, and differentiated instruction. Each and every child is unique and I cannot wait to help them individually grow in academics and in discovering who they are in Christ. More importantly, I am excited to partner with each family as we guide our youth in deepening their God given talents and extending them beyond the classroom so that our Father in Heaven would be glorified.

When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with family, painting, coaching softball, and serving others. My family runs a ministry/business called Outsiders Brand which is a Christian clothing company with the sole purpose of sharing the Gospel and giving back to communities in need.

My life scripture: “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
Soli Deo Gloria,
Ms. Serrano

Elementary Program

Teacher(s): Carrie Hebert & Olivia Serrano

The second Grade is an exciting time in your child’s learning experience. The learning environment becomes more rigorous than they initially encountered in first grade, and students are ready to take on the challenge of expanding their skills and knowledge. Children at this age continue to develop their literacy skills and are able to read more complex stories. Second-graders practice expressing themselves in writing with greater proficiency. They will learn more about the concepts behind certain math skills and work towards mastering their addition and subtraction facts. The second graders will use technology to collaborate on shared and individual research projects that incorporate concepts covered in Social Studies and Science. Students learn how to use digital tools with the aid of the teacher to publish writing and create presentations. Most importantly, children begin to develop a greater understanding of the God of the Bible, and learn that His desire is to have a meaningful, loving relationship with them through Jesus Christ. As they study the Bible, they learn what it means to walk with God and live in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

Field Trips: Conejo Botanical Garden, the United States Post Office, the Chumash Indian Museum, a local retirement home, and the Leo Carrillo Tidepools.

Activities throughout the year include: Family Heritage celebration (Thanksgiving), The Flat Stanley Project, Chapel presentation for Operation Christmas Child, visit elderly at a retirement home during the Christmas season, participate in Speech Meet and Spelling Bee, class Poetry Jam, Grandparents’ Day, International Day, Special Rallies. Parties celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, 100th day, Dr. Seuss Day, Easter, Valentine’s, and the end of the year. Weekly chapels: Bible buddies with 5th grade and Family Groups with all ages.
